New Site Design

In redesigning this site from its previous look, we decided to use lots of photographs. These have been optimized for fastest loading. We have eschewed flash objects because, frankly, we find them annoying. We wanted the site to be easy to get to any one part from any other part with a minimum of clicks.

All browsers do the same thing, right?

Some are faster and easier to use than others, but all web browsers do the same thing. They get the page information from the web server where the website you are viewing is stored. This information is in the form of a language that the browser comprehends and then, using the resources of your computer, it draws, or renders, the web page on your computer screen. The browser handles the colors, the position of everything on the page, it fetches the next page when you click on a link, and so forth.

Just as a spoken language changes over time which necessitates a new edition of a dictionary to be published, so too do the rules and standards for what a browser can do. It becomes necessary to change the version of the browser so it can understand the new elements of the language. For this reason, and because browsers are constantly being tweaked to plug up security holes in how they can be manipulated by the code they get from the server, you should always use the most resent version of whatever brand of browser you have on your computer.

The appearance of this site is driven entirely by Cascading Style Sheets.

Internet Explorer

This site will render on versions of Internet Explorer back to 5.5 though not all features will operate if your are using IE before 6. IE 6 SP2 is fully supported with only minor formatting issues. At the time of this writing, only 0.9% of people browsing the internet are still using IE 6. Internet Explorer 7 has fewer bugs & eccentricities. There is no advantage to using old versions of any browser as they are certainly slower and provide much less protection against online browsing hazards.

Older versions of Windows

If you are still using Windows 98 OE, SE, or ME, best results will be obtained by using Firefox 2.0.0.20 which is still available if you search. For everything to work, the minimum version required of Internet Explorer is IE6.
